Mechanical seals are used to prevent leakage of fluids or gases between rotating and stationary parts in equipment such as pumps, compressors, agitators, and mixers. 4. Elastomers (Viton, EPDM, and Nitrile): elastomers are used for seals where flexibility is needed in chemical-resistant applications, most typically found in pharmaceutical and chemical plants, as well as automobiles.

5. Stainless Steel: Stainless steel parts are applied in mechanical seals for resistance to corrosion and stability in high temperatures. Stainless steel is widely used in food processing applications, water treatment applications, and other industries that require hygiene and durability.

Factors to be considered when choosing the materials for mechanical seals

• Operating Temperature: Various materials have different ranges of temperature tolerance. Tungsten carbide or ceramics are preferred for high-temperature applications, such as in the oil and gas industry.

• Fluid Type: The type of fluid being sealed also plays a critical role in the selection of the appropriate seal material. For example, the chemical industry requires seals to be resistant to corrosive acids or alkalis. In food processing industries, sanitary standards must be met.

• Pressure Conditions: Tungsten carbide and carbon are preferred for high-pressure environments since they provide better resistance to extreme pressures.

• Wear and Tear: In industries where the equipment is used frequently, materials that provide excellent wear resistance such as ceramics or tungsten carbide are preferred.
